On 20 August 1940, the feast day of St Bernard of Clairvaux, 224 boys from Years 7 to 11 carried their desks from St Monica’s across the Park to a new school on The Strand in Moonee Ponds and St Bernard’s College was born. In 1963 Classes commenced on the current campus in West Essendon.

At St Bernard's College, we are proud to be a leading Catholic Secondary school for boys, providing a wide range of curricular and extracurricular programs to over 1600 young men from Year 7 through to Year 12. As an Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) school, we draw our identity and culture from a rich Catholic tradition that is informed by the Charism of Edmund Rice and inspired by our patron, St Bernard of Clairvaux.

Our highly talented and committed staff are experts in the education of young men, seeking to nurture each individual's God-given talents so that each one can become a confident, responsible, faith-filled man. Using the four touchstones, the College offers a liberating education, based on gospel spirituality, within an inclusive community committed to justice and solidarity.

We pride ourselves on offering an innovative, empowering, holistic and just educational experience that equips our young men academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually to make a tangible difference in the communities from which they are drawn, as well as at the state, national and international level.

Our motto

"Discere et Agere" - "to learn and to do"

comes alive every day in the teaching of our staff, the atmosphere of activity and engagement of our young men, and the excellent outcomes they achieve as they follow their distinct educational pathway.

At St Bernard's College, we are committed to providing a nurturing environment that challenges and inspires our young men to become the best version of themselves. We invite you to join our vibrant community and experience the difference of a St Bernard's College education.

EREA

Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) is the system of schools offering a Catholic education in the tradition of Blessed Edmund Rice. Our schools are in every state and territory of Australia.

EREA schools are very diverse. They are both primary and secondary, co-educational, boys, regional/rural, boarding, early learning centres and flexible learning centres.

There are 55 schools and 2 Early Childhood Centres across Australia, and 34 Associated schools. They are known as Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice tradition.

EREA was established by the Christian Brothers in 2007 and now has full responsibility for the schools operated by the Brothers at that time.

As part of their mission within the Catholic Church and shaped by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, schools offer an education guided by the Charter for Catholic Schools in the Edmund Rice Tradition.

EREA schools are part of an international network of schools in over 20 countries called Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders.
