Bernie's Spotlight - Anthony Laughton (2009)

In this week's Spotlight we'd like to congratulate Anthony Laughton on becoming an AFL-listed boundary umpire!

Anthony was our College Captain in 2009, and went on to graduate from Monash University with a Bachelor's degree in journalism. He has since built a strong career in the media industry, with wide experience in radio and as a media advisor to the state government. Through hard work and dedication, Anthony has been able to balance his love of umpiring with his media career - initially running the boundary in local leagues, and working up to state level in the NEAFL and VFL (including two VFL grand finals!). Now he has been duly rewarded with an AFL spot.

Anthony was kind enough to come in for a chat about his umpiring journey - stay tuned for the next issue of The Strand where he shares his insights into umpiring at the game's top levels. Once he recovers from an injury, look out for him to debut in the first half of the 2025 season!

Anyone interested in taking up umpiring or learning more about the job can go here for more information: Become an Umpire - Play AFL

We love to highlight the success of our old collegians - so if you or someone you know has done some exciting things since their time at St Bernard's, please write in and let us know!

Flashback Friday - Bernie

This Flashback Friday we're honouring our loveable St Bernard mascots, starting with the original Bernie!

Bernie is one of the stars of our archives room at the College. This reproduced article from 1981 records his official appointment as school mascot when he was just a puppy.

Bernie was succeeded by Bernie Jr, and more recent students might remember Iggy (named after Edmund Ignatius Rice).

Record Setter at the ACC Athletics Carnival

And we'll cap off this issue of Bernie's Bulletin with a shout-out to Charles Barrett, who set a new record at the ACC athletics carnival yesterday. He ran an impressive time of 8:22.21 in the U19 3000m race, breaking a record that had stood unchallenged since 1987!
