At St Bernard's College, we believe in nurturing the holistic development of our students. That's why we have a comprehensive Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) program designed to empower our students to become respectful and well-rounded young people throughout their time at the College and beyond.

Our SEL program is delivered through a range of activities and initiatives. Every second Friday, our Homeroom teachers conduct SEL lessons, which cover topics such as Emotional Literacy, Personal Strengths, Positive Coping, Problem-solving, Stress Management, Help-seeking, Gender & Identity, and Positive Gender Relations. These lessons are aimed at promoting respect, positive attitudes, and behaviours, as well as teaching our students how to build healthy relationships, resilience, and confidence.

We also collaborate with our Health and Physical Education faculty to create and implement specialised units for students in Years 7-10, and hold dedicated events such as R U OK? Day to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing. We have also introduced Wellbeing tasks within the St Bernard's Student Diary to encourage our students to reflect on their emotions and take steps to care for their mental health.

In addition to these initiatives, we have also organised incursions across the year for our students. These include workshops such as Victoria Police ‘Think U Know’ Social Media presentation and Smashed – Alcohol Education for Year 7 and Year 8 students, Show some Respect and Consent workshops for Year 9 students, and a Consent keynote for Year 10 students. Year 11 and Year 12 students also attend workshops on One Punch laws and Life after School.

We are constantly looking for ways to improve our SEL program, and in 2023, we partnered with Elephant Ed to provide workshops for our Year 7-9 students. Additionally, we have collaborated with ySafe, Australia's leading cyber safety experts, to provide the best possible cyber safety education and support to parents, teachers, and students across all year levels

The College recognises that our SEL program plays a vital role in helping our students become responsible, empathetic, and resilient individuals who can navigate the challenges of life with confidence and integrity.
