St Bernard's College values education that extends beyond academic achievement to include social responsibility. We inspire our students to actively contribute to the community and work towards a fairer and more equitable world. Our students have access to a range of extracurricular activities that involve participation in student-led advocacy and justice programs.

ERA for Change

Edmund Rice Advocacy for Change

Since 2021 students have engaged with the youth advocacy network known as Edmund Rice Advocacy for Change (ERA for Change). It has been a source of inspiration and empowerment for students from our College and the dynamic network of schools across Australia. Collaboratively, students explore local and global issues impacting society. We encourage active participation in ERA for Change, which not only broadens the scope of student advocacy and voice but also contributes to the establishment of an agency for social change and justice within our College.

Helping Hands

This year, the College has partnered with Helping Hands Mission Inc. in Airport West. The College has pledged to send 10 student volunteers each week to lend a hand at Helping Hands Airport West. Their mission currently is to transform a humble container into a multi-purpose office and gathering space for assisted volunteers. The tasks ahead include painting - to breathe new life into the container, shelving Installation - that will create functional storage solutions to keep things organised, office space clearing and planter box decoration.

St Bernard's College also offers various programs that immerse students in the life of our First Nations people. These programs include the Indigenous ‘On Country’ Cultural Immersion and the FIRE (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) carriers group. This group meets and develops initiatives and activities throughout the year to advocate for our First Nation's people. This is aligned with our Reconciliation Action Plan and also First Nation's Student Engagement program. We are also fortunate to have Academic in residence, Professor Mark Rose (Old Collegian), as a source of wisdom and guidance working with our College community. We believe that these programs provide valuable experiences to our students and foster a deeper connection with our broader community.

These student-directed advocacy programs receive strong support from the College and are closely aligned with our annual advocacy and justice initiatives. Additionally, our students actively participate in fundraising efforts for CARITAS’ Project Compassion, St Vincent de Paul’s Winter Sleep Out, and the Christmas Appeal.

St. Albans Tutoring Program

Edmund Rice Community Services Partnership

As part of our advocacy and justice initiatives, we actively participate in the St. Albans Tutoring Program. Working in conjunction with Edmund Rice Community Services, this transformative program allows our students to offer mentoring and support to peers who are at the margins within the St. Albans area. The tutoring program operates on Wednesday afternoons throughout the year, providing free learning and social support to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
