Ms Sara Zuccaro & Mr Rin Takagi join us to give us some insight into their role's as a language assistants at the College
This week saw the cross country squad move Thursday morning training to the Year 9 campus at Resurrection House. Our aim was to ease the travel for the Year 9 boys who have been attending training at the senior campus on both Tuesday and Thursday mornings. It is also hoped that we will be able to pick up a few more Year 9 runners with training being a little bit easier for the Year 9 boys to attend. Training from Resurrection House also allows us to use Aberfeldie Park and the 4km Maribyrnong River circuit and this will be ideal when we begin the Maribyrnong 150 Charity Run training and are joined by the girls from St Columba’s. On Thursday morning Ms Roberts and I were joined by Mr Sweeney, the Director of the Year 9 campus, and the team completed a solid interval session at Aberfeldie. In the coming weeks I hope to be able to speak at some of the year level assemblies to give some background about the Maribyrnong 150 and to also encourage some more students to attend cross country training. A reminder that training is held each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6:50 am and breakfast is provided for the boys afterwards. As mentioned previously, training is from the senior campus on Tuesdays and from Resurrection House on Thursdays. I look forward to seeing the numbers at training increase and just a reminder that we are happy to have all ability levels involved.
(Note: For those parents who have sons who are new to the school or who have not been involved with the cross country squad before, please feel free to send Mr Gerard Brown an email - gbrown@sbc.vic.edu.au if you would like more details about training)
It has been a BOOMING Term!
Not only has this term seen the very beginning of our very own St Bernard’s College Drumline, it has seen all of our incredibly talented young musical men stepping up and performing in front of live crowds, event after event. It has been a real SMASH!
The drumline has been going strong. If you are not a neighbour of the St Bernard’s College community and haven’t been woken up at 7:30 on a Wednesday morning to the sound of drums, you are missing out. Guided by our new percussion teacher, Mr Smith (the tall one) our young men are coming to rehearsals every week have been persistent, have given it their absolute best, and together, have created a solid ensemble that will forever be a part of St Bernard’s College.
Not only is the drumline thriving, but the SBC Voices (Choir) have really picked up its game this term. Starting this year with a solid 5 members, the SBC Voices now includes 20 members; with particular growth from our year 7 cohort. I for one, am looking forward to seeing it continue to grow, and can only imagine what the next few year have to hold.
Together, on Monday, 22nd of May, the SBC Voices and SBC Drumline travelled to St Joseph’s College – Ferntree Gully, and participated in the ACC Music workshop. If you thought 10 drummers in one room was loud, try 50. With ACC schools across Melbourne, it was loud, a real lesson and a great privilege to witness, et alone be a part of. The choir on the other hand got the wonderful opportunity of singing in four-part harmony. With well over 70 in the room, it was an absolutely gorgeous sound.
Over the last few weeks, Mr Benjamin Tansey has been guiding and rehearsing music with his Year 12 VCE Music class for the Reconciliation Assembly on the 26th of May. The performance was profound, and ever so resonant. All of the young men and Mr Tansey should be incredibly proud of their amazing work.
Term two is almost over, and yet, so much more is to come. On Thursday 1st of June, Year 12 student, Abishan, Navaneethan will be DJing for the St Bernard’s boys outside the College library for our term 2 LunchLive event, and a week after that, on the 6th of June, the VCE Music boys will be performing one of their solo pieces each for the VCE Soiree Music Evening. Good luck boys, it is going to be a complete ripper! In that same week, we will be hosting instrumental music bursary auditions and interviews. There will be a total of eight bursaries offered to students at the college:
Whole Semester of free Instrumental Lesson Bursaries – valued at $898
Year 7 Music Band Program Instrument Bursary (2 available)
Instrumental/Vocal Bursaries (1)
One Term of free Instrumental Lesson Bursaries– valued at $449
Year 7 Music Band Program Instrument Bursary (3 available)
Instrumental/Vocal Bursaries (2 available)
Good luck to all of the boys who have a go!
Nonetheless though, music lessons are available in Term 3. With the year sevens performing what they have learned on the 15th of June, the opportunity to continue learning on that instrument (or another) is available. For any questions regarding signing up for lessons, please email the music administrator, Michelle Puglisi at mpuglisi@sbc.vic.edu.au, or contact the Head of Music, Joshua Romeo at jromeo@sbc.vic.edu.au
Finally, trybooking is open now for signing up for lessons or reregistering for lessons in Term 3.
Until next time, arrivederci!
Throughout Term 2 the Year 8 Football Academy put away the boots and have been training for an altered version of the game – Indoor AFL. The confined version of the game played 7 a side, helps develop the players decision making in tight spaces, zone defence and short skill execution.
The 18 boys were split in 2 teams ‘Team Heppell’ vs ‘Team Garcia’ with Year 12 mentors Zac Trucolo and Corey Barbaro joining in to play and coach. After a number of morning training sessions in the college gym, the Year 8 Football Academy took to Action Indoor in Tullamarine last Friday to play a match. After an arm wrestle back and forth Team Heppell prevailed as champions, winning 23.12.150 over Team Garcia 23.11.131. ‘Best on Ground’ was awarded to Charlie Tudor.
Congratulations to all boys involved in the Year 8 football program for their participation last Friday and for their great start to the year in the classroom.
In Term 2 the soccer academy involved morning training sessions with Mr Manos and Mr Mallachan, assisted by students in our senior ACC team. On Friday May 26, students were placed in teams for a 6 v 6 match to focus on executing skills worked on in training such as using space and finishing.
A big congrats to team orange who defeated team blue in a tight 7-6 contest. Congratulations to the students for their participation in the Year 8 Soccer Academy.
The focus of this camp was to support students to examine the relationships between humans and the outdoor environment since 1990. This camp is a case study exploring societal relationships with the Bunurong Coast reflected in different forms of conservation, recreation, primary industries and tourism practice.
Students engaged in activities at Caldermeade dairy farm to look at water retention and regenerative farming practices, they engaged in conservation activities at Carney’s reserve in Wonthaggi, removing tree guards and collecting rubbish as part of the South Gippsland Conservation Societies efforts to revegetate the site. They built wildlife boxes with the Phillip Island Nature Parks rangers before watching and learning more about the conservation efforts to support the little penguins.
Students also engaged in a number of surf lessons with offshore surf school, learning more about the Bass coast and how to best protect this playground of ours.
The College Foundation 10 years ago announced the SBC AFL Team of the Century.
The night was hosted by former Essendon player Simon Madden (1975) and interviews with the AFL Legends was conducted by leading sports personality Francis Leach (1985).
On 8 May, the Year 12 Business Management students visited the manufacturing facility of Yakult, a probiotic milk beverage originating from Japan as part of their operation management area of study.
Upon entering the facility, the students were amazed to be greeted by a complex manufacturing system comprised of many machines each with their own purpose in the production of the tasty milk beverage. The students learnt about the inputs and processes that occurred behind the scenes to create the beverage and were astounded to see inner workings of computer aided manufacturing and robotics for the automated production of the milk.
From sterilisation, to homogenisation, the students were immersed in an abundance of knowledge of the production process. Finally, the students were treated to some of the delicious probiotic drinks at the end of the trip filled with more then 6.5 billion Lactobacillus Casei Shirota strain good bacteria. Overall, the knowledge the students received on their trip to Yakult would prove to be very beneficial when applying the content of their classwork in the coming weeks.
Caedin Wall (Year 10) wrote the below reflection piece after a recent media studies excursion, its always great to see what our students take from learning opportunities such as these.
Dear Newsletter Readers,
We are thrilled to share an exciting opportunity with you, an exclusive visit to the popular game show, "Millionaire Hotseat"!
Our year 10 Media and Film Studies class successfully secured tickets to attend this highly anticipated event held at The Docklands.
This excursion provided invaluable insights into the world of television production and the art of editing, including the integration of music, overlays, questions, and cutaways.
One of the major highlights of this excursion was the opportunity for our students to engage with the renowned host, Eddie McGuire. We had the chance to ask him questions and gain a deeper understanding of his role as a television presenter and the fascinating world of game shows. Eddie McGuire's presence adds an extra layer of excitement and learning.
Throughout the day, we immersed in a live game show production. We witness first-hand the coordination of cameras, lights, and sound, gaining a behind-the-scenes understanding of how television magic is created. The energy of the production crew and the thrill of watching contestants vie for a chance to win a fortune.
This included one of our own students (Zac Welsh) securing a $100 cash for his audience participation.
This excursion aligned perfectly with our Media and Film Studies curriculum. Providing our us with a real-world application of the concepts we have learned in class. It deepened our appreciation for the intricacies of television production, including the role of editing in enhancing storytelling and engaging the audience. Experiences like these broaden our horizons enabled us to see first-hand future career possibilities in the industry.
Thank you to Ms. Cassar, Mr. Soler & Ms. Caminiti for the opportunity
