On Friday, 18 October 2024, we celebrated the remarkable achievements of our graduating class of 2024. The day began with a heartwarming gathering of parents over morning tea, while students participated in a memorable keepsake activity by signing their peers' shirts.

Following this, we all came together for an assembly where awards were presented. Congratulations to the deserving recipients of the various awards—we are proud of your hard work and dedication!

Later that afternoon, the Year 12 students and their parents celebrated a special mass at St Monica’s Church, Moonee Ponds, where students received their graduation certificates, marking a significant milestone in their academic journey. The festivities continued at the Victoria Pavilion with a valedictory dinner, featuring speeches and a photo montage that celebrated their time at St Bernard's.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to supporting our graduates during the upcoming VCE exams and in the years to come. These young men will always be a part of the St Bernard's community, and we are excited to see what the future holds for each of them.

Over the past few weeks, our Year 8 students have been fully engaged in fun and team-building at camp.

They took part in thrilling activities like rafting, abseiling, and the exciting vertical challenge.

These camps offer unforgettable experiences and serve as a wonderful opportunity for personal growth, bonding, and creating lifelong memories.

Here’s to our young adventurers and the invaluable lessons they’ll take with them!

The recent Japan Study Tour was a transformative experience for 16 students from Years 9 to 11, who spent two weeks immersing themselves in Japan’s rich culture and language. They visited historical landmarks such as the Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto, Todai-ji in Nara, Itsukushima shrine on Miyajima Island and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Students got the opportunity to feed deer, partake in a traditional tea ceremony, and make traditional Japanese sweets, Momiji manju. Students also took part in the Kumano Brush Festival, donning traditional festival clothing as they helped tow a portable shrine up a hill to the main shrine alongside the locals. Afterwards, they joined in the festivities, celebrating the occasion with the community.

A major highlight of the trip was the visit to a Japanese high school, Higashi Uji High School, where students had the opportunity to experience the daily life of Japanese high school students, engaging in classes, traditional activities like Ikebana (flower arranging), and even joined in extra-curricular club activities with their Japanese peers after school. Our students joined basketball, tennis, and track practices, and some even had the chance to attend an English conversation club. This not only provided them with the opportunity to practice their Japanese but also allowed them to connect with local students on a personal level and share their own experiences of life in Australia. Many students formed lifelong friendships with their Japanese peers, which they continue to nurture through social media. 

Another memorable experience was the chance to meet sumo wrestlers and watch a sumo bout. In a thrilling twist, one of our students even got the rare opportunity to step into the ring and face a sumo wrestler! While they didn’t win, it was an exciting and unforgettable moment for everyone. From historical landmarks to modern cultural experiences, the Japan Study Tour offered a well-rounded exploration of Japanese life and culture, leaving the students with lifelong memories and a deeper appreciation for Japan.

Recently, some of the Year 11 Accounting students were invited to a business breakfast hosted by the Accounting and Finance firm Matthews Steer. It was a valuable experience for the students to hear from a St Bernard’s Alumni employed at this firm on his journey to be an accountant. Ben gave the students a lot of his time during the morning to answer their questions about University courses and what his job entails.

One of the highlights of the breakfast was the guest speaker. Professor Susan Alberti, who gave an interesting insight into her business’ and some of her experiences in the 80s and 90s including some stories about her business in construction. She also explained her involvement in getting the AFLW competition up and running and her many philanthropic endeavours, especially in the medical research area. 

The students enjoyed the experience (and the breakfast as well).

Last week 19 of our talented students participated in the highly anticipated ACC Junior and Intermediate Chess Tournament hosted at Parade College. The event was filled with electrifying energy as our students showcased their exceptional chess skills, engaging in close and riveting matches that captivated the audience. Their strategic manoeuvres and intense gameplay were a testament to their dedication and passion for the game.

Despite the tough competition, our students demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship and resilience throughout the tournament. While the coveted pennant escaped us this time, we take immense pride in the unwavering effort and commitment displayed by our team. Their performance serves as a testament to their hard work and determination, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.

Experience gained from this tournament will undoubtedly serve as a valuable foundation for our team as we gear up to make a triumphant return next year. With renewed determination and an unwavering spirit, we are poised to continue our journey towards success in the world of competitive chess.

Today, we take time to recognise and celebrate the incredible work of our teachers, as well as those in schools everywhere. Your dedication and passion truly shape the lives of our future leaders.
